Explorer Scout Leader: Rob Neal

Joining Us
We ask young people interested in joining the Explorer Unit to attend meetings for about six weeks before being invested. This enables them to meet others and learn about what activities they can expect to take part in. They will need to learn the Scout Law and the Scout Promise. The Explorer Scout uniform should be obtained near to the investiture date. The investiture ceremony can take place anywhere the Unit decides, at a Scout HQ, down a cave on a climbing wall etc.. This is when the young person repeats the Scout Promise in front of the Unit and becomes an Explorer Scout. We expect all Explorer Scouts to have a complete Explorer Scout Uniform.

How much Does it Cost?
Subscriptions are £144 per year at present. We ask that ALL parents pay this by direct debit monthly. Of this roughly £30 goes towards the Explorer Scout’s annual membership fees to the Scout Association/District/County. The remaining goes to the Unit to run the weekly programme of activities, transport and subsidising some weekend activities. Thursday night meetings/activities are usually covered by subscriptions as well as some Christchurch District or Dorset County competitions we enter. Camps and other weekend activities are priced to cover our expenditure, but occasionally have to be subsidised from subscriptions.

Training Scheme
All Explorer Scouts have the opportunity to gain The Chief Scout Diamond and Platinum Awards during their time in Scouts. They may even be able to gain the Queen Scout Award. For older Explorers there is also the chance to gain The Explorer Belt (a challenge for Explorers travelling abroad on their own). There are also a number of activity badges to have a go at, many of which can be achieved outside of Scouting (see Explorer Scout award bookbadge bookwebsite). Alongside the Diamond, Platinum and Chief Scout Awards we run the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, Bronze, Silver and Gold.
